How to Build a Stage for a PS3 Game

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a multimedia entertainment console developed by electronics juggernaut Sony. Many games designed for the PS3 offer a feature that allows you to create your own content for use in the game, including playable levels. Once created, these levels allow you to play through them as you would the levels that come as part of the game. Some games even allow you to upload your designed levels onto the PlayStation Network, giving other players around the world the opportunity to play them as well.

Instructions

1

Check to see whether your game allows you to create your own levels. Because not every game will have this feature, this is something the game will clearly advertise if it does. Check the back of the game case or a website for the maker of the game. Among the titles that offer the ability to make your own level (as of 2011) are "Little Big Planet," "Little Big Planet 2," "Far Cry 2," "Modern Warfare 3" and "Borderlands."

2

Play through a couple of levels of the game to get some ideas. The game developers make games for a living, so taking notes on how they structure a game will help you plot your level. Keep in mind things like the frequency of environmental traps, diversity of obstacles, frequency of enemies and the ability to accomplish the level.

3

Acquire the tools you need for development by playing through the game. Certain games, such as those in the "Little Big Planet" series, require you to obtain the objects and materials by playing the main game. The more materials you acquire, the more you will be able to do when developing your own level. Some games may provide all of the materials without the need for any additional acquisition, so check the manual of the game you are playing.

4

Watch the tutorial to develop your level. Accessible from either the main menu or a menu from within the game editor will be a tutorial that is essential for getting the basics of developing your levels. Refer to this tutorial as needed.

5

Be patient when developing your level. Rome was not built in a day, and the same goes for your game level. The developers have given you all of the tools you will need to create the level, which cuts out a huge chunk of the development time, but it will still take you a considerable amount of time to craft a level that is both challenging and enjoyable.

6

Make a level that appeals to you. Keep a balanced level that is fun but not impossibly difficult. If you like it, that is all that matters.
